[Ed. – Reminder of why UK and U.S. may have been complaisant about the specific delivery errand of Adrian Darya 1 (former Grace 1), which British commandos diverted to Gibraltar on 4 July. The UK tanker Stena Impero was seized by Iran two weeks later in the Strait of Hormuz and has been held ever since, presumably to guarantee a favorable outcome for Iran with Adrian Darya 1. Iranian officials claimed the crude has been transferred to an unnamed buyer, after the Adrian Darya 1 arrived off Tartus, Syria. Now Iran is making noises about releasing the UK tanker.]
The Iranian oil tanker Adrian Darya 1 has arrived at Syria’s Port Tartus, US National Security Adviser John Bolton told reporters, after it was seen just off the port Saturday in satellite images provided by Maxar Technologies Inc.
The vessel, formerly known as Grace 1, was released August 15 by Gibraltar authorities after promising authorities in writing that it would not transport its cargo to Syria — a commitment broken as soon as the vessel left port.
