President Trump on Thursday finally backed off his controversial attempt to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census, but vowed he would still push forward with the politically-charged issue a different way.
Speaking in the White House Rose Garden, Trump claimed victory despite the capitulation and said he was only dropping the census quest to sign an executive order instructing all federal agencies to provide the Commerce Department with records on the number of citizens and non-citizens in the U.S. …
The Commerce Department already probes for citizenship through the so-called American Community Survey, which polls 3.5 million households annually. That survey has continued unabated despite Trump’s census push, which was dealt a debilitating blow last month when the Supreme Court ruled that the administration had not provided sufficient legal basis to include the citizenship question.
