Driver crashes car swerving to avoid hitting octopus

Devon and Cornwall Police say they have arrested a man this evening on suspicion of drug driving [sic] — after he crashed his car ‘swerving to avoid an octopus’.

The incident happened on the A381 in the South Hams earlier this evening.

Shortly before 7pm, Kingsbridge police took to Facebook and said: “Emergency services are currently dealing with a single vehicle RTC on the A381 by the South Milton turn where a car has overturned.

“The driver stated he swerved to avoid an octopus. He is currently in custody on suspicion of drug driving .” [sic]

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that a man in 40s was now in custody at Torquay Police Station, and had been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.  The spokesperson said that the crash had occurred between Salcombe and Kingsbridge.

Roads monitoring service Inrix first reported a crash on the A381, on Salcombe Raod at Wooltson, at 17:29.  At 18:38 it reported the road has been  cleared and traffic has  returned to normal.
