[Ed. – In case you were worried that Robert Mueller might actually be doing his job, fear not. The investigation that led to these indictments were wholly unrelated to his Russia probe.]
Three Virginia businessmen — including Abul Huda Farouki, a major Democrat donor who contributed to Bill and Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama — were charged with violating US sanctions on Iran and for conspiring to defraud the US government through a shady Pentagon contract.
The Department of Justice said the contractor, the Dubai-based Anham, lied to the Pentagon in 2011 in order to win an $8 billion, 10-year contract to supply food to U.S. troops in Afghanistan, the DOJ announced. At the time, Barack Obama was president and Hillary Clinton was secretary of state.
The three men indicted on charges of fraud, conspiracy, and money-laundering were:
- Abul Huda Farouki, a Clinton donor and former CEO of Anham.
- Abul ‘s younger brother, Mazen Farouki, who oversaw Anham’s Afghanistan affiliate.
- Salah Maarouf, a businessman from Fairfax, Virginia.
In order to reduce costs on the construction of two warehouses in Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan (so they could pocket higher profits), the Farouki brothers and Maarouf shipped steel through Iran — which is currently under sanctions by the U.S. government.
