[Ed. – Trump’s tweet has certainly got everyone going. Will be interesting/informative to see what happens. Fury from the “Assad narrative” side suggests a feeling that this will spike the impending campaign, at least for the moment. There’s no unified sentiment on the other side, however. As so often, it’s not clear what the warning amounts to. What Assad and Russia will do about it is the big question. (Iran is not as decisive an actor in this case; Iran’ll “go” either way, but it’s Russia Assad can’t execute this op without.)]
President Trump late Monday warned Syria’s Bashar al-Assad and his allies in the region not to attack rebels in the country’s Idlib province, warning that “hundreds of thousands” could be killed.
Trump’s tweet came shortly after Iran’s foreign minister said “terrorists must be purged” from Idlib, the last opposition stronghold in the country.
Mohammad Javad Zarif’s comments in Damascus came as Syrian forces and their allies are preparing for an assault. …
The BBC reported that Assad is planning a huge offensive.
President Bashar al-Assad of Syria must not recklessly attack Idlib Province. The Russians and Iranians would be making a grave humanitarian mistake to take part in this potential human tragedy. Hundreds of thousands of people could be killed. Don’t let that happen!
