In NYC, in order to operate a taxicab, a taxi medallion is required. A limited supply made them very valuable assets, and before Uber and Lyft, the medallions were valued at $1M.
Cab drivers invested their savings in these medallions, but now, the demand for traditional cabs has dropped, and the value of the medallions has also dropped, by 80%.
In June, a NYC cash-strapped cabbie committed suicide, the sixth since last November.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has blamed “the unregulated expansion of Uber” for these unfortunate suicides.
So why is her campaign using Uber, and not yellow cabs?
Ocasio-Cortez, who became a household name after defeating Democratic incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley (D., N.Y.) back in June, has criticized Uber several times on Twitter as recently as March, in a post flagged by Fox News.
“NYC’s fourth driver suicide. Yellow cab drivers are in financial ruin due to the unregulated expansion of Uber. What was a living wage job now pays under minimum,” she tweeted. …
