The state’s largest LGBT Democratic club endorsed Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday over his openly gay challenger Cynthia Nixon, citing his support of gay marriage and protections for trans New Yorkers.
The vote came after Nixon received a warm reception Wednesday night from the Stonewall Democrats, who packed into a room at the LGBT Center on West 13th Street for the endorsement meeting.
“I try to have my ear to the ground on these sorts of things,” said club president Rod Townsend. “This was not so much a surprise.”

Cuomo pushed the Legislature to legalize gay marriage in 2011, four years before the US Supreme Court legalized it nationwide. He’s also issued a series of executive orders adding new protections for LGBT individuals against discrimination.
“With the governor’s stances over the years (on gay marriage) and people from his staff have always asked questions, ‘How can we help, what can we do,’” Townsend added. “Our membership notices that.”
In short, there was little reason for the Stonewall Dems to switch horses, he said.
