Schumer added in a statement that Republicans have an obligation to ensure that the special counsel can continue his investigation into Russia’s election interference and any ties between Trump’s campaign and Moscow after the president questioned the makeup of Mueller’s team.
“Our Republican colleagues, particularly the leadership, have an obligation to our country to stand up now and make it clear that firing Mueller is a red line for our democracy that cannot be crossed,” the New York Democrat said.

Trump’s lawyer said on Saturday that it’s time for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to end Mueller’s investigation. The lawyer, John Dowd, later said he was not speaking on behalf of the president.
