[Ed. – Isn’t that what they said when he hired Tillerson?]
Less than 24 hours ago, Rex Tillerson went on record to declare the Russians were behind the chemical attack in England. But then the White House Press Secretary refused to go that far. Suddenly, Tillerson is out of a job and found out via Twitter.
It is striking that the State Department has taken a pretty firm stance against Russia and it is also striking that Jeff Sessions has outlasted Rex Tillerson. But it looks terribly incriminating that the President would fire Tillerson after Tillerson calls out Russia so publicly. It just reinforces the narrative that the President is aiding and abetting Moscow even if it is not true.
There’s a time for everything. The time for firing Tillerson was to never hire him in the first place. Firing him in the run up to a meeting with North Korea as tensions with Russia rise is not good and looks terrible. Whether we like to acknowledge it or not, image and impressions matter.
