Researchers reviewed reports of heavy drinking or binge drinking from men and women over the age of 18 in all 50 states.
According to the study, conducted by 24/7 Wall St, the highest rates of drinking to excess were primarily located in the Midwest while adults in the south were less likely to over-indulge in alcoholic beverages.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that nearly 30 people die every day in the United States from a motor vehicle crash involving an alcohol-impaired driver. Overall, 30 per cent of all traffic fatalities across the nation involve alcohol.
The numbers are shocking, which prompted 24/7 Wall St to compile a list of the drunkest states in the country.
At the top of the list, ranking in at number one, is North Dakota, with nearly 25 per cent of all adults reporting binge drinking or heavy drinking. The state with the lowest number of adults who binge drink or drink heavily is Tennessee, with 11 per cent of adults drinking alcohol in excess.
