Fortune magazine has published its 2016 selection of the World’s Greatest Leaders and although you might not agree with all of this year’s choices, the Black Lives Matter movement scored a victory.
Among the 50 persons selected, spot number 27 is shared by the three activists that founded the Black Lives Matter movement back in 2012 after the murder of Black teenager Trayvon Martin.
Activists Alicia Garza coined the phrase while Patrisse Cullors made it into a hashtag. Together with fellow activist Opal Tometi, the trio created the Black Lives Matter network.
What differentiates the Black Lives Matter movement from others, according to Fortune Magazine, is that the group has steadily managed to gain momentum since its founding in 2013.
According to the experts responsible for this year’s selection, Black Lives Matter is playing an important part in pressuring presidential candidates to address institutional racism.
