Drone crashes inside college stadium just before kickoff

A drone — or unmanned aircraft — crashed in the southwest corner of Commonwealth Stadium near the suite level just before kickoff of the University of Kentucky season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday night.

UK officials recovered the drone, university spokesman Jay Blanton said. He said there were no injuries to fans or damage to the stadium.

“We’ve also talked to the owner and are considering next steps, because it should not have been inside the stadium,” Blanton said. The drone belongs to a student, Blanton said.

The Federal Aviation Administration regulates the use of drones and where they can be flown. The FAA says no drones or airplanes can be flown over stadiums one hour before until one hour after a game.
