Three School Board members on Thursday gave their support to proposed county policy to prohibit mobile food vendors from operating near school sites during school hours.

Such a policy would apply to any mobile food vendor and would not affect food sales at activities or events held after school or during vacations, said Deborah Kravitz, Del Norte County Unified School District’s nutrition services director.

But opponents, including trustees Angela Greenough and Jamie Forkner, pointed out that any mobile food vendor policy would currently target a single business — Silly Suzie’s ice cream truck.

“That’s the reason this policy will be created is for one particular vendor,” Greenough said. “It’s targeting one particular vendor, and that is the reason I would have to completely say no, I do not want the school district to have open conversations with the county on this.”

Greenough and Forkner voted against a written agreement to ban mobile food vendors near district schools.
