Madonna fans in hysterics after she praises Margaret Thatcher on Instagram

The Queen of Pop found herself under a wave of criticism after she shared a picture of the late British prime minister Margaret Thatcher from her Instagram account, captioned with the Iron Lady’s famous quote from 1989: “If you set out to be liked, you would be prepared to compromise on anything at any time, and you would achieve nothing.”

Madonna tagged the photo with her own comment, “Thank you Margaret Thatcher,” followed with the hashtags #unapologetic, #rebelheart and a love heart. …

Madonna’s comments didn’t sit well with her gay fans, the Pink News notes. Thatcher is still a polarizing character in Britain’s LGBT community for her stance on AIDS in the 1980s and for passing Section 28, which banned schools from “promoting homosexuality” (the legislation has since been repealed).

Madonna, who lived in the U.K. during her marriage to movie director Guy Ritchie, quickly deleted the Thatcher post. But it’s been saved for posterity and shared widely on the Web.
