A 34-year-old woman is in jail Tuesday, charged with throwing her son off the Yaquina Bay Bridge.
Jillian McCabe of Seal Rock, Ore., about 10 miles south of the bridge, called 911 at about 6:25 p.m. PT to report that she threw her 6-year-old boy into the water, Newport Police Chief Mark Miranda said.
The 6-year-old boy’s body was found almost four hours later floating near a marina, Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Jonathan Klingenberg said. The Coast Guard dispatched two boats and a helicopter to search the area, and the county sheriff’s marine patrol and county search and rescue teams also were involved.
McCabe, who was at the scene, was charged with aggravated murder, murder, and first-degree manslaughter.
“I feel really sorry for the family,” Miranda said. “Losing a kid isn’t easy.”
The woman allegedly told police that she heard voices telling her to throw the child off the bridge.
