BREAKING: Brat outpacing Cantor 56-44 with 71% of vote counted; UPDATE

[Ed. – UPDATE: RealClearPolitics calls it for Brat!  8:10 PM EDT with 86% of the vote in, RCP has Brat still up 56-44 and uncatchable.]

[Ed. – OK, so the post below is as of half an hour ago, when only 57% of the vote was in.  But on the hour break, Fox just quoted an AP update with the numbers in the subject line.]

Economist David Brat leads House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-7th, by more than 6,000 votes with 175 of 243 precincts reporting, according to the Virginia State Board of Elections.

Brat, a Henrico resident and economist at Randolph-Macon College, has 27,372 votes to Cantor’s 21,097.

The stormy Republican primary in the 7th District has exposed discontent among Republican Party activists and has drawn national attention. Immigration reform drew much debate during the contest that played out in voters’ mailboxes and through TV ads.

The winner of the primary will face Democrat John “Jack” Trammell.
