Derek Jeter will retire following the 2014 season, the star New York Yankees shortstop announced Wednesday on his Facebook page.
Jeter, who will turn 40 in June, has been a fixture in the middle of the Yankees’ infield since 1996 after breaking into the majors the previous season.
He played in only 17 games last season after suffering a broken leg in the 2012 playoffs.
A 13-time All-Star, Jeter will take a .312 career batting average and 256 home runs into his 20th major league season, all with the Yankees.
