Some day, all of the politicians in Washington who were born before Al Gore invented the internet will have died. No longer will the World Wide Web, with its infinite memory, be able to haunt self-righteous “statesmen” with reminders of unpopular views they themselves once held.
That will come as cold comfort to Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, champion of fairness, who was born in 1944, well before the internet was a gleam in its inventor’s eye. Among the past comments associated with Durbin’s good name that he doubtless wishes he could erase from the collective memory of the nation is one made in 2003 concerning Bush Bush nominee to the 6th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, Washington lawyer Miguel Estrada.
Back then the Washington Times obtained a memo in which a staffer in Durbin’s office recounted a meeting his boss had missed with Ted Kennedy and “representatives of various civil rights groups.” Here is what the staffer wrote about the groups present for the confab:
[Y]esterday’s meeting focused on identifying the most controversial and/or vulnerable judicial nominees, and a strategy for targeting them. They also identified Miguel Estrada (D.C. Circuit) as especially dangerous, because he has a minimal paper trail, he is Latino, and the White House seems to be grooming him for a Supreme Court appointment. [Emphasis added]
That’s got to hurt. Apart from the racist implication that a prospective appointee was “dangerous because he is Latino,” just yesterday, as Deneen Borelli reminds us, Durbin accused Republicans of holding up an Obama nominee on the grounds of her race and her sex:
And so Loretta Lynch, the first African-American woman nominated to be attorney general, is asked to sit in the back of the bus when it comes to the Senate calendar. That is unfair. It’s unjust. It is beneath the decorum and dignity of the United States Senate. This woman deserves fairness.
Pot, meet kettle.
