It’s been more than seven months since Evan Michael Minton, a transgender man, said he was denied a hysterectomy at Dignity Health Mercy San Juan Medical Center in Carmichael.
On Wednesday, the American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit on his behalf against Dignity Health.
Minton said his surgery was abruptly canceled the day before. His doctor was able to perform the hysterectomy at another local hospital.
“And so now I have the complete body I’ve needed and that I’ve wanted. And It feels so, so good,” said Minton. “It’s so affirming.”
But there was a time when it didn’t feel this way. Even though he was able to get his surgery.
“As much as I wanna let it go, I know that what happened to me [and] having those resources and being able to do it, I know that is really uncommon especially for transgender people,” said Minton. “I don’t have animosity but I do have a deep concern that this might happen to other people.”‘
