A relative of a man who died after being shot along with five others Friday afternoon in the South Austin neighborhood said social media led to his cousin’s death.

“Facebook killed him, that’s what did it,” a man who stated he was a cousin of the victim said as he looked over the shooting scene from behind yellow police tape. “They boxing over Facebook. It’s so stupid.”

The shooting happened shortly after 1:30 p.m. in the 5600 block of West Corcoran Place, just south of the CTA Green Line Central Avenue stop, according to police. The medical examiner’s office identified the victim as Byron McKinney Jr., 24, of the 500 block of North Pine Avenue. He was taken to Loyola University Medical Center and pronounced dead at 2:13 p.m. Police earlier estimated the victim to be 17 to 19, and a cousin said he was 23.

Four other men and a teenage boy were wounded, and all were in good condition at West Suburban Medical Center.

In other city shootings Friday evening, one man was killed in Archer Heights and two men were wounded in Englewood.
