Detectives have determined that a woman who told police a man forced her to remove her hijab when he threatened to set her on fire near the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor may have fabricated her story.
According to the Ann Arbor police, numerous inconsistencies in statements provided by the alleged victim were identified and detectives determined the incident in question did not occur.
The woman originally told police the incident happened Nov. 11 in the 600 block of East William Street. She said a man approached her and demanded she remove her hijab or he would set her on fire. She said she complied and was able to leave.
Detectives from the Ann Arbor Police Department worked in conjunction with the University of Michigan Police Department, as well as the FBI. Investigators conducted witness interviews and reviewed multiple surveillance videos of the area in question.
