Tacoma police remove suspicious explosive device from home

Police have safely removed a suspicious device that shut down a Tacoma neighborhood and forced the evacuation of an elementary school on Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators and officials from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives determined the device found at a home near East 50th Street and McKinley Avenue East was explosive. It was taken to another location to be safely detonated.

Police were alerted to the device around 1:30 p.m. Officials then alerted the school district of the potential threat to nearby Sheridan Elementary School.
