Shadows of things to come: Honduras arrests 5 Syrians headed to U.S. with stolen passports

Once again, citizens of the United States find themselves in the midst of a fight Barack Obama is willing to have. We have been down this road before, over immigration (the final chapter of which is yet to be written), Ebola (which ended without further incident, no thanks to the president), income inequality (the gap between rich and poor has grown on his watch), health care, college campus rape — the list goes on.

About the only fight Obama is not willing to have is the fight against Islamic extremism, which he refuses even to call by name. So when simultaneously, the Islamic State flexes its muscles, massacring 176 innocent people in Paris, and hundreds of thousands of Syrians stage a mass exodus, Obama takes the course of least resistance and declares the already-porous U.S. borders open to Syrian refugees.

Obama gave fair warning that he would govern in this fashion as far back as 2007. During a Democratic presidential debate in July of that he and his fellow aspirants were asked what action they would take in the event of another 9/11-style attack. Obama answered first, replying:

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Well, the first thing we would have to do is make sure that we’ve got an effective emergency response — something that this administration failed to do when we had a hurricane in New Orleans.

His presidency has followed suit with a steady diet of reaction rather than proaction.

As for that 9/11-style attack, all the indicators suggest it’s not a matter of if will occur but when. The answer to the question of “by whom?” is also known. Yesterday, eight Syrians were apprehended at the Texas border, trying to enter the U.S. illegally. The day before, authorities in Honduras arrested five Syrians headed to the U.S. with stolen passports.

Hillary Clinton, who wants to assume the reins of power once Obama blessedly steps down, observed in print that “it takes a village.” But it doesn’t take a village to murder thousands of innocent people in the name of Islam. It takes but a handful. We learned that as a nation the hard way on Sept. 11, 2001; at least most of us did. Barack Obama has yet to learn that lesson, and regrettably we will pay the price for his ignorance.
