Cuomo begs companies to stay in NY… where over 1,500 workers risk losing jobs

The Cuomo administration is practically begging multiple businesses to stay open, as over 1,500 upstate New York jobs are reportedly on the chopping block. This from the man who has done much to kill jobs in New York state, including supporting a $15 minimum wage and passing draconian anti-gun legislation, which has driven arms manufacturers into new zip codes.

Multiple reports came out today regarding the situations at three Kraft-Heinz Co. plants, as well as the James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant.

The Heinz plants employ over 900 workers, while the FitzPatrick power plant is putting 600 jobs at risk.

Governor Andrew Cuomo and Sen. Chuck Schumer made separate pleas for the companies to consider staying in business in New York.

First up is one of six nuclear power plants in New York which could affect 600 workers and deal a huge economic blow to the Syracuse region.

Via Politics on the Hudson:

Entergy Corp., which owns two nuclear plants in New York, said Monday it will close the James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant near Syracuse late next year and into 2017, putting 600 jobs at stake.

The move means New York would be down to five power plants. Entergy owns one of the the largest ones: Indian Point in Buchanan, Westchester County.

The closing of the Fitzpatrick plant in Oswego County comes after failed negotiations with the state over ways to avoid a shutdown. The plant generates 838 megawatts of electricity, enough to power more than 800,000 homes.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the state would fight the closure.

“The closing of the James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant will devastate the lives of the more than 600 employees and their families. Good corporate citizenship must appreciate that there are many factors that count as the ‘bottom line,’” Cuomo said in a statement. “The state of New York will pursue every legal and regulatory avenue in an attempt to stop Entergy’s actions and its callous disregard for their skilled and loyal workforce.”

Then came the announcement that Heinz could close three plants in upstate New York, affecting 940 employees.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Sen. Charles Schumer on Monday called on Kraft-Heinz Co. to keep open three upstate New York plants that could be set for closure.

The Pittsburgh-based company indicated last week that the three plants — in Avon, Livingston County; Campbell, Steuben County; and Walton, Delaware County — were under review.

The plants employ 940 workers.

“We are aggressively advocating to keep – and where possible expand – these jobs in New York, and these recent reports have only redoubled our efforts,” Cuomo spokesman Rich Azzopardi said in a statement.

A recent report from State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli indicate that “vast swaths of upstate are still struggling” with job creation.

“Central New York, North Country, Southern Tier, Mohawk Valley; significant regions of the state that are still in the negative as far as job creation,” he said.

Cuomo promised to focus on the upstate economy “like a laser beam,” then immediately pivoted his focus, announcing he planned to “save New York City.”

Now he’s just begging for people not to leave the state.
