Barack Obama’s former campaign manager Jim Messina is confident that after the president’s big week, the country is marching in lockstep with the Democratic Party’s values, almost ensuring Hillary Clinton the presidency in 2016.
“President Obama in many ways has helped start the same kind of political revolution that Reagan did,” Messina told POLITICO’s Playbook Breakfast on Wednesday. The change, he argued, has been “driven by demographic changes and driven by President Obama” himself.
Messina mentioned huge shifts in public opinion on major issues including LGBT rights, immigration, income inequality and climate change that make the 270 electoral votes necessary to secure the White House simply out of reach for Republicans.
But he added that Republicans aren’t doing themselves any favors with outlandish comments in their already cacophonous primary: “Every day they send me a gift basket of crazy stuff.”
