U.S. helped jailed Cuban spy impregnate wife from afar

Gerardo Hernandez, who was released from jail in California on Wednesday, has returned home just in time for the birth of his child.

Pictures of Mr Hernandez happily posing with his heavily-pregnant wife Adriana Perez left many in Cuba puzzled when they emerged over the weekend.

Now the mystery has been solved.

US officials have revealed that Mr Hernandez was granted permission to artificially inseminate his wife from behind bars as a goodwill gesture during secret diplomatic talks between Havana and Washington.

Mr Hernandez, 49, had been serving two life sentences on murder conspiracy and other charges. …

“We can confirm the United States facilitated Mrs Hernandez’s request to have a baby with her husband,” the US Justice Department said in a statement.
