Australia: Hearse stolen, with coffin, as funeral procession prepared to leave

Mourners watched in horror at a funeral in Australia’s Blue Mountains when a man stole the hearse with the body in the back.

Relatives and friends of the dead man couldn’t believe their eyes when the coffin disappeared up the road with the funeral director banging on the car’s window.

Seconds later the deceased’s brother jumped into his own car in hot pursuit. …

The funeral home guy was banging on the window saying, “what are you doing? You can’t drive away in a hearse,” she told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Mrs West’s husband, Tobias, who was the brother of the dead man, human rights lawyer Seth Richardson, later managed to trap the hearse in a cul-de-sac at Wentworth Falls, in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney.

“Tobias jumped out and said, ‘What the hell are you doing?” Mrs West added.

The man replied, “I need to go to hospital.”

Police said the man who tried to steal the hearse had been missing from a nearby nursing home where he was suffering from dementia.
