Woman dead, cop shot in chest in St. Louis suburb

A woman is dead and a police officer is seriously injured after a shooting in University City Monday night.

Det. Sgt. Fredrick Lemons with the University City Police Department says officers were called to the 7400 block of Wayne around 10 p.m. for a report of a burglary in progress. The caller said a man climbed through a bedroom window and started shooting.

Lemons says when officers arrived at the scene they found a woman with a gunshot wound to her leg. She was taken to an area hospital where she died. Her name has not been released.

As three police officers approached the home, one of them was shot in the chest, Lemons says. He says the officer who was shot was able to return gunfire.

The suspect ran through the backyard. It is unknown if he is injured. He was last seen running east toward Midland Avenue. He is described as being in his early 30s with long dreadlocks, medium build, and light complexion. He is believed to be the son of the woman who died.
