Parents ‘too busy’ to notice 12-year-old son had gone blind

A couple have been jailed for neglect after their their son went blind in one eye because they were ‘too busy’ to take him for appointments that could have saved his sight.

Gillian Hendry and Craig Dick, both 34, kept the 12-year-old boy and his sister, two, in a filthy house in central Thornaby, Stockton-on-Tees, littered with rotting food and dirty nappies.

The boy went blind in his left eye from cataracts because the couple failed to take him to hospital appointments for six months.

In court the pair claimed that they were ‘too busy’ to notice his eye had gone white, and previously told police and social workers that they never looked the boy in the face.

The pair also failed to take the boy to the doctor to treat his arthritis, and the condition became so pronounced he was left with a limp.

The court heard that the dirty conditions, and the boy’s arthritis, put his sight at increased risk.

Photographs of the house show rooms strewn with mess and human waste, despite the fact that the couple also owned three TVs and a remote controlled Humvee toy.
