USS Taylor, Navy frigate, runs aground in Black Sea

WASHINGTON—The USS Taylor, one of two Navy ships deployed to the Black Sea to provide security assistance for the Olympic Games, ran aground and is in port in Turkey, the Navy announced Tuesday.

Navy officials said the frigate was being inspected for damage in Samsun, Turkey. The incident occurred Feb. 12 as the ship was preparing to moor in Samsun.

The Navy announced the Taylor was dispatched to the Black Sea along with the USS Mount Whitney to conduct “maritime security operations” and training with allied nations. But officials said the two ships would be available to help with evacuations or other support in the event of a security incident around the Olympic Games taking place at the Black Sea resort of Sochi.

Navy officials said the frigate was out of operation as a result of the incident and, at least for now, wouldn’t be able to respond to an emergency situation. …

There were no injuries in the Navy accident.
