Sonny Perdue, Georgia’s first Republican governor since Reconstruction, also played a key role in the creation and promotion of the now-controversial Common Core educational standards. In fact, as testament to Perdue’s role, the standards were released nationwide in a ceremony at Peachtree Ridge High School in Gwinnett County in 2010, with Perdue officiating.
Since then, of course, the standards have become a prime target for conservatives who insist on claiming that they represent a liberal federal infiltration of education, with the intent of distorting the minds of American schoolchildren. In one of the milder critiques, the standards were condemned last year by the Republican National Committee as “an inappropriate overreach to standardize and control the education of our children so they will conform to a preconceived ‘normal’.” A recent headline at the conservative Eagle Forum was a little more blunt:
