Loony-left NYC mayor Bill de Blasio wants to close public schools for Muslim holidays

Bill De Blasio

How many Muslims does it take to close New York City Public Schools? The answer is 69,985 — roughly 21/2500 of the total population of the Big Apple — going by the most recent demographic breakdown (2000 Census).

The scant size of the Muslim community hasn’t deterred the city’s new absurdly liberal mayor, Bill de Blasio, from pushing to close city schools for two Muslim holidays and the Lunar New Year. The Daily News reports (h/t Weasel Zippers) that hizzoner appeared on WNYC’s “Brian Lehrer Show” on Monday, where he announced his plan to publicly observe the Muslim holy days of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, as well as the Islamic New Year, with school closures. Said the mayor:

It is complicated in terms of logistics and school calendar and budget. But it’s something I want to get done in a reasonable time frame.

Reactions were not solicited from the 99% of students who aren’t Muslim, though it is doubtful many of them will complain about extra days off from school. Their parents — especially those in families where both work and need to make special arrangement for school closures — are likely a different story.

Ditto for de Blasio’s predecessor, the extreme (but not nearly as extreme in hindsight) Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who opposed the change, saying kids should not miss more school.

Defenders of the move will point to the longstanding tradition of New York Public Schools closing for the Jewish “high holidays” of New Year and Yom Kippur, but Jews, who number around 1.1 million, make up 13% of the city’s population.

In the meantime, the city’s Hindu population, though not as “heavily” represented as Muslims, feels slighted that de Blasio hasn’t yet taken a firm position on whether schools should close for Diwali, the festival of lights. Dr. Shashi Shah of the Association of Indians in America is quoted as saying:

We are disappointed. We’ve been trying for a long time…. It’s very important for the community.

Observers of Festivus have not weighed in.

Hey Bill, Will you still close the schools if you do not get the State Aid for they days you choose to keep the schools closed. Now, no disrespect intended do we close for Christian and Jewish Holidays? Why the hell open the schools at all no one is learning anything as witnessed by the low graduation rates. DO YOU HAVE A BRAIN IN YOUR HEAD???? Wait he’s a democrat.

  • WilliamSpires

By the time the liberals finish designating holidays for every nation on earth including all of the Islamic terrorists martyrs, there will be no days left for school. Maybe then everyone can homeschool and abolish the NEA.

      Yes! If only.

  • tmazzbo

Well with all the Religions chiming in, why bother having school
    days at all?

  • tmazzbo

This is not a case of loony-tunes by NYC mayor Bill de Blasio. This is a purposeful attempt to inculcate in the public’s mind that Christianity is just another silly religion.

Why is Blasio prejudice against Jews and Christians that need the New Testament feast days off, why is he anti fist Amendment? Why don’t kids get the 7 Judo/Christian holidays off like Passover Pentecost Tabernacles Purim Day of Atonement trumpets Hanukkah. Why are Jews and Christians being persecuted?

  • Dawn

Well, let’s see. Close school days for the Muslims.
How about school day closings for the Cubans
Puerto ricans, Blacks, Mexicans etc. I don’t want to leave whites out either. This is absurd. Do this in New York and then where else. Gee, with all these holidays for these immigrants here we will be left with just week ends. Yay!!

  • Stephen Bennett

He would be doing all children a huge favor if he would just shut down the NY public schools altogether – permanently! The hell with these onesy-twosy Christian-mocking holidays.

There’s virtually no learning taking place in those cess pools anyway. Just bus ‘em all to the gommit indoctrination compounds and run their liberal nonsense through their tiny little brains and get it over with. Oh, wait! That’s all they are doing now.

I wonder if city schools are closed in observance of 9/11?

    • Howard Portnoy

      Another Muslim holiday.

This sets a dangerous precident for allowing any group to demand days off for what ever “religious holiday”. There are so many belief systems in the US now that there will be a stampeed of groups demanding days off. How about leaving it the way it is, have them celebrate their holidays on the weekends or on the other days off, many working people do that anyway. Holiday falls on a Wednesday? Just celebrate it on the weekend.

And so the end draws nearer.
