Mag publishes, retracts cartoon implying Jewish control of U.S. government

In a recent issue the Economist, a British newsmagazine, published an article about the Obama adminstration’s efforts to reach a deal with the Iranian government over its nuclear program. The article was accompanied by a political cartoon that depicts President Obama being chained and restrained in his effort to a seal of the U.S Congress. Included on the seal are two representations of the Star of David, a traditional symbol of Judaism. An interpretation is that Obama is being “held back” by the Congress and its Jewish influences–a common anti-Semitic trope.

The Washington Free Beacon reports that the Economist has removed the image from the online version of the article, with an accompanying message from the editor: “The print edition of this story had a cartoon which inadvertently caused offence to some readers, so we have replaced it with a photograph.”
