After viewing hundreds of homes from Los Angeles to San Diego, in the fall Debbie and Jim Winters finally found their dream abode—one with a master bathroom and bedroom suite so large it consumes nearly a third of the 3,480-square-foot house.
The bathroom has manufactured quartz countertops and a soaking tub with a heater to maintain the water at a constant temperature. The 52-square-foot shower—three times as big as the industry’s typical 16 square feet—has crushed-glass tile and two entrances. In all, the couple spent $44,000 on upgrades to the bathroom. The home, which is north of Anaheim, Calif., cost $1.2 million and was built by developer Standard Pacific Homes.
“The master bath is the gem in the crown,” says Ms. Winters, a 61-year-old retired accountant. “I feel like Cinderella.”
