There will be no Obamacaregate

Jay CarneyIt looks as though the president either lied or (like the Cambridge, Mass., police) acted stupidly when he said nineteen (count ‘em 19) separate times that if you liked your health care plan you could keep your health care plan — that nobody would take it away from you.

Now that it has become abundantly clear that what Obama assured Americans would not happen is happening — and already has happened to millions of Americans.

They have received cancellation notices from their insurance carriers, and the best and brightest minds in the administration are doing their darndest to make any suggestion of impropriety vanish.

Jay Carney on Tuesday allowed as how his boss was neither deceitful nor naïve when he repeatedly and emphatically promised that everyone could keep their plan under Obamacare. In true Clintonian form, the spinmaster said what Obama was referring only to people with health insurance coverage dating to before the law’s 2010 enactment. It depends on what is is.

Carney has not been so transparently dishonest since he claimed that a Boston audience booing Obama for gloating over the trade of fan favorite Kevin Youkilis was actually chanting “Yoooook.”

The press secretary was not alone in his efforts to persuade Americans to disbelieve their lyin’ eyes. House Minority Whip Steny H. Hoyer chimed in, acknowledging that Obama’s message “was not precise enough,” adding:

Clearly, it should have been caveated [sic] with, ‘Assuming you have a policy that, in fact, does do what the bill is designed to do.’

Once again, Democrats have no serious explanation for their wunderkind’s latest blunder … and they don’t need one. Sure, right now it looks bad. This is not just some ordinary lie about the raid on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi or some minor fabrication about whether the president knew that his IRS having was systematically targeting right-wing political groups. This time, his legacy would appear to be on the line.

But it’s not. Today, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sibelius will be grilled by Congress. Down the road, she might be jettisoned if the administration finds it needs a sacrificial lamb.

Short of that, expect no accountability. With this administration, there never is any.
