Obama tells Israelis ‘Walk a mile in the Palestinians’ shoes’

While stressing the United States’ unwavering commitment to Israel, President Obama called on the Israeli people to be willing to compromise in order to create an environment where lasting peace and security is attainable.

Speaking to an audience that included scores of university students, Mr. Obama said the United States is Israel’s best friend and most trusted ally and the U.S. would stand up for Israeli’s security at all times, particularly when it comes to threats posed by Iran and its nuclear program.

While he said he understands the mistrust that the Israeli people have for the Palestinians, he said Israel must stop occupying areas that the Palestinians claim as their state….

“The Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, their right to justice must also be recognized,” he said. “And put yourself in their shoes. Look at the world through their eyes. It is not fair that a Palestinian child cannot grow up in a state of their own …”
