Gosnell case update: Judge acquits abortionist of three murder charges

GosnellThe trial of Philadelphia abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell took an unexpected turn today when the attorney for the defense motioned that three of the charges eight murder charges against his client be dropped, and the judge acceded.

LifeNews reports that Judge Jeffrey Minehart sided with Gosnell’s attorney, Jack McMahon, in his claim that there was insufficient evidence to convict the doctor of the charges in the deaths of three of the eight infants. Minehart also consented to dropping five counts of corpse abuse at McMahon’s request, though he failed to provide an explanation for that ruling.

Among the charges dropped was one that involved a 28-week-old baby that Gosnell allegedly killed after it was born alive and whose remains were found in a freezer in his abortion clinic.

The trial, which continues to receive scant attention from the mainstream media, has been described by Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue and Pro-Life Nation, as a “watershed moment for the issue of abortion.” Newman adds:

The discovery of his horrific practices helped shed light on an abortion industry that has run amok without oversight or accountability for decades, and has prompted significant changes in abortion laws and attitudes toward enforcement in several states.

Despite compelling testimony from former Gosnell staffers, who insist they saw signs of life even after the abortion had been completed, the defense maintains that there were no live births at Gosnell’s Women’s Medical Center abortion clinic.

Despite the judge’s granting today’s motion, Gosnell still faces the other murder charges brought by the prosecution, including that involving 41-year-old Karnamaya Mongar, who died at Gosnell’s abortion clinic after a botched abortion.
